How to wear leggings and get the look right

It’s fair to say that the humble pair of leggings has never been a huge favourite of the designer fash pack, but most mere mortals know that a good pair of leggings (in fact, make that several good pairs of leggings) are an essential component of any wardrobe.

They are ridiculously comfortable and the kind of thing you can throw on with a sweatshirt when you’re having a dress down day, or team with a fabulous jumper dress or flowing top with good winter boots for a more sophisticated look – and of course they are ideal for running or working out in.

The key to getting the look right is to avoid any unsightly VPL. Firstly, it’s important to buy leggings that fit properly. If they’re too tight they’re going to cling in all the wrong places and will probably be a tad uncomfortable too. Opting for a pair that are made with a cotton/lycra mix will ensure they keep their shape so there’s no need to buy them a size too small.

Secondly, remember the golden rule and avoid wearing short tops with leggings (unless it’s part of a workout kit, in which case it’s just about acceptable!). Choose longer floaty tops and sweaters that skim the thigh and finish the look off with a pair of sexy boots for maximum impact.

Colour-wise, black leggings have long been the colour of choice for most people, but thanks to artists like Nicki Minaj, bold prints are going to be huge news for leggings in the next few months.

Print leggings are a little trickier to wear, so the rest of the outfit will need extra thought. One option is to embrace the clashing prints trend full-on and wear print leggings with a print top as well. The other option is to keep it simple and opt for a plain block colour top. Either way, the secret to wearing print leggings is to be brave, bold and confident, and have fun with cute pumps and accessories. Just remember – buy the right size and opt for a cotton/lycra mix!
