Belgian designer Raf Simons (formerly of Christian Dior – remember those awesome sequined sneakers? That’s him!) has been reconstructing Calvin Klein for the past year. The overhaul includes daring materials and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek fun while still maintaining an all-American look, which is Calvin Klein’s mainstay. To me, Calvin Klein was the epitome of ‘safe’ American fashion that had lost itself through mass-production for mediocre department stores. However, Raf Simons has been given the daunting task of breathing new life into an almost cliche ‘fashion’ line. With this collection, Simons has proved himself to be the king of reinvention whether at a classic fashion house like Christian Dior or an American icon like Calvin Klein. Good on Raf! My favorites are the Looney Toons sweaters that are surely an important part of American pop culture, which makes sense to include with an American fashion brand like Calvin Klein. Here’s to looking forward to Raf Simons at Calvin Klein!
