The call of the wild – the trend of camouflage
Camouflage clothing has gone through periods of popularity and decline. During the nineties “combats” were the trend; hardwearing baggy trousers with large pockets in khaki, green and camouflage.
Celebrities have certainly embraced the new camo look in the last few years. Beyoncé Knowles stylishly wore Balmain’s stretch cotton pants in 2010. More recently, we saw Jamie Chung in NYC wearing True Religion’s Camo jeans and Hilary Duff has been seen wearing frayed camo shorts. Jessica Sanchez nailed the camo skinnies look by combining them with neutral heeled booties and a cropped shirt to show off her abs, while Rihanna has been spotted wearing River Island Camo crop tops, with midriff showing. There is little doubt that camo clothing is back with a vengeance.
When it comes to what you wear underneath it is certainly no longer fashionable to go commando. The latest trend in underwear is military camouflage style. Gone are the days of babydolls, silk and lace; modern women are asserting their individuality with military precision.
Camo underwear may be a new fashion trend started by men. MMA fighter Kevin Burns was one of the first to pose in camouflage boxers in 2010. Now every type of underwear is available in camouflage tones, from modest boxers and briefs to more daring low-rise bikini briefs and Tarzan style camo thong with front and rear flaps – strictly for role-playing!
Women’s camouflage lingerie has taken a similar path with all styles now available in camouflage, from cutout mini dresses and cami sets to Y-back thongs and classic bikini sets. Adventurous women are wearing camo leg wraps with tie side thongs.
One of the celebrities currently in the spotlight is hell raiser Miley Cyrus. She promoted her new album Bangerz sporting the Chapelle Underwear Military Woodland Camo Briefs. Designed for boys, they provide comfort and support, but many women are also enjoying them for their more adventurous appeal.
Women wearing boy’s camo underwear is not the only new development. Designers are now producing more color varieties; no longer are you restricted to standard issue greens, blues and yellows. Papi underwear offers a selection of extremely vivid colors with men’s ranges in pink, sky blue and fiery orange. Diesel, always keen for their fans to show the waistband above their jeans, has launched a range of underwear with camo waistbands.
If you are unsure of the rules for camo fear not, Cosmo published a guide to wearing camo in December 2013. Their top tip is to accessorize; think camo bags and boots with gunmetal jewelry.
While some celebrities have pulled off the full camo look, it is generally advisable not to cover yourself from head to toe in camo. Showing some skin is vital to produce the rugged and wild look that camo helps to portray. A big no-no is mixing camo with animal print; not only will the two styles clash but also you will start to look more like a big game hunter than a commando.
When it comes to your underwear, anything goes! It can certainly help to ignite a spark for some sexy nocturnal fun.
