SUHO: A POP STAR ROCKING THE MACAU FILM FESTIVAL

Suho is a teen idol for many years in Korea thanks to his ex-band: EXO. But for the last few year Suho has also developed a prolific film career. He was one of the guest of honor of this year Macau Film Festival and Conferences . We had an exclusive encounter with the maverick Suho, in between press events.

Q: Do you watch lots of foreign movies? Who are your favorite filmmakers?

Suho: I love watching foreign movies. Particularly I enjoy the films of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan . I like the innocence presented in Tim Burton’s films. I enjoy many foreign actors and directors but I am too humble to refer to them by name.

Q: What roles are you looking for right now?

Suho: Most of The roles that I’ve done so far have mainly been positive characters. So, at this point, I really want to be a villain in a movie. So I’d like to play roles like ‘Joker’ by Joaquin Phoenix.

But, recently, I also like watching movies about people’s ordinary daily life. I really liked the movie, HER, and also the Korean movie ‘Parasite.’

Q: What bands do you listen to and what’s going on with EXO?

Suho: I really like Coldplay or Maroon 5 because they relieve my stress. They are full of life. In terms of Exo, our schedule is set up a whole year in advance by the company so my share time is spent acting. When I receive a script I do research into the character and try and find similarities between my character and my personality and then I try to expand and dig deeper and try to get different feelings.

Q: With all the Super Heroes movie, what Hero would you like to be?

Suho: Interesting question. Well, If I had the chance I would chose Doctor Strange. It is a very good movie and Benedict Cumberbatch did such a good job in it. He seems like a salty guy in his daily life but he is a also there if people need him, so deep down he is a good guy.

Q: Most of your roles have been you as a young person like in ‘Glory day’ in 2015, but in ‘A Student’ it’s more of an adult role?

Suho: I think to be young or a teenager, that’s all about hopes and dreams. Since I did Glory Day in 2015, I’ve grown up and have had more experiences but I don’t think youthful refers only to age., You can be grown up and still have dreams and be a youthful. But this is about whether you can realize your dreams.

Q: How do you feel about being in a movie where you play a pop star or singer in a band?

Suho: Of course now I am a K-pop singer so at the same time if i receive a script where I have to play a pop singer, i think it would be very interesting.  So for me a K-pop singer in a movie would have a different personality and live in a different environment and have different experiences so it would still be a new experience for me. Earlier this year I did a short film about a k-pop star and I really enjoyed this experience.

Q: Do you have an acting coach?

Suho:  At the University I majored in acting and drama so I had an understanding about acting and did readings with classmates. I do know a little and then but when I am on set, I follow the orders of the director.
